If you’re planting your garden by the phases of the moon and signs of the zodiac, below is the information for this week.
At this point there are just two “keep-an-eye ons:” The moisture level in the garden and the days to maturity for seedlings and seeds. Both are crucial as the ground is dry and even though it doesn’t feel like it, we’re getting ever closer to fall.
The moon is in the dark phase now and will remain there until the new moon at 12:24 a.m. July 19 – this coming Thursday. Thus through next Wednesday be planting only those veggies that produce beneath the ground.
The signs find Gemini (the arms) ruling. Gemini is the bean sign. Even though the moon’s in the dark phase, I’d suggest you plant another rotation of beans since half of the equation is right. Of course they may never germinate because of the drought, but then if we get some rain considering how warm the soil is they’ll pop right on up.
Great general planting returns Tuesday and Wednesday with the sign in Cancer (the breast) and the moon still in the dark phase. These are great days for any below-ground producers that like it hot and dry.
Our second killing sign of the month is up for Thursday and Friday when the sign moves to Leo (the heart). No planting should occur. On Thursday the moon will move to the light phase.
A series of flowering signs, all in the light moon, is on tap beginning Saturday and continuing through July 25. The first three days of the stretch (July 21-23) are ruled by Virgo (the bowels), followed by July 24-25 under Libra (the reins). These are bloom days and flowers should do that abundantly – given, of course, there’s some water involved!
