An initiative to encourage Kentucky children to spend more time outdoors will be the subject at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Frankfort, 859 E. Main St., at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.
The speaker, Ed Councill, will have as his topic, “HCR 29: How Do We Implement It?” Councill spearheaded the resolution, which was adopted by the 2012 General Assembly and signed by Gov. Steve Beshear.
Councill is the founder and co-owner of Canoe Kentucky and a strong promoter of eliminating what he calls “nature deficit disorder” among children because of their need to spend more time in outdoor recreation and education.
He was a former lead planner in the state Division of Water and is the president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit kidsGROWkentucky Inc. The resolution calls for more outdoor activities for children and their participation in the state’s streams, wilderness areas, bike routes and parks.
The public is invited to the service, and refreshments will be available during a discussion period afterward.
