Family and Consumer Sciences: Holiday Seminar set for Nov. 9

By Tamara Thomas Published:

Believe it or not, it’s that time of year when we start to plan for the holiday season. And one way a lot of people have been getting in the mood for the holidays over the past 13 years is to attend the annual Holiday Seminar held this year on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Boyle County Extension Office.

This is an annual event organized and hosted by Ft. Harrod Family and Consumer Science Extension Agents with the Cooperative Extension Service (Anderson, Boyle, Franklin, Garrard, Jessamine, Lincoln and Woodford counties).

The cost is $15 to attend, which includes the price of lunch prepared and served by Boyle County Homemakers; plenty of morning refreshments, seasonal door prizes, giveaways, handouts, wonderful guests speakers and a holiday fashion show.

Chef Michael of Somerset Community College Culinary School will share cooking tips on making holiday desserts and also his take on the world of reality TV and his profession. Chef Allison Davis will be sharing tips on preparing Wild Thyme Holiday Cooking this year and sharing recipes.

A popular demonstration every year is about decorating for the holidays. This year Horticulture Extension Agent, Dennis Morgeson from Washington County, will be demonstrating how to bring your yard into your holiday decorating scheme. Using what you have from your yard can cut down on decorating expenses and help save during the holiday season.

Another guest speaker, meats specialist Gregg Rentfrow from UK, will show us how to get the most from our cooking dollars in the kitchen by demonstrating the best cuts of beef when you buy a whole rib eye.

Displays of holiday wreaths and a demonstration on Geo-mesh will round out the day along with a Fashion Show from the Derby Shop and Raggs of Danville. Registration information is available from the Franklin County Extension Office, 101 Lakeview Ct.

The deadline to register is Friday, Nov, 2. Call the Extension Office at 695-9035 for registration information or check out the Extension Office Web site.
