USA Today wrote of the play, “Shrek is a triumph of comic imagination with a heart as big and warm as Santa’s. It is the most ingeniously wacky, transcendently tasteless Broadway musical since ‘The Producers.’”
The musical brings to life the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre (Ervin Webster) — not a handsome prince — shows up to rescue a feisty princess (Sydney Johnson and Katie Miller).
Throw in a donkey (Chris Miller) who won’t shut up, his hot girl friend (Meckaela Glenn), a bad guy (Justin Miller) with a short temper, a wooden puppet (Taylor Strickland), and a cookie (Samantha Wilcox) with an attitude and more than a dozen other fairy tale misfits and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there is one on hand.
“Shrek the Musical” is part romance, part fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone. It ran for 441 performances on Broadway garnering 2009 Tonys for Best Costume Design, Best Actor in a Musical and Best Set Design.
The universal theme of acceptance resonates throughout the show. Some of the memorable songs are “Big, Bright, Beautiful World,” “This is my Story,” “Who I’d Be” and “Freak Flag.”
The technical crew consists of stage manager Carol Oerther, and Richard Abbott, Katy Doyle, Sue Norman, Nancy Robertson and Nic Miller.
Leslie Noell is the director while Diana Kelley and Ranelle Mackey are producers.
McDonald’s West is sponsoring a Shrek photo opportunity from 5-7 p.m. Monday. Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Dragon will be there to say hello. Come and meet your favorite character!
