Planting by the Signs: Only 3 veggies left to plant without protection

By Philip Case, Published:

If you are doing any planting now, and you’re doing it according to the phases of the moon and signs of the zodiac, here’s this week’s information.

According to Home Gardening in Kentucky published for the Cooperative Extension Service by the University of Kentucky, there are only three veggies left that can still be planted in the unprotected garden and be expected to make it to harvest.

The veggies are, with the last date for planting in parenthesis: leaf lettuce (Friday); spinach (Sept. 1); and radishes (Sept. 15).

Of course the gardening season doesn’t have to end if you’re prepared to protect delicate plants from frost. Just be mindful of what you can plant now.

The moon moves(d) from the light to dark phase at 2:09 this afternoon, depending on when you read this. With the full moon in force until the next new moon at 10:13 a.m. Aug. 25, be involved in only dark moon activities — and if that includes planting in the unprotected garden, then we’re talking about radishes.

A look at the signs reveals our monthly series of so-so signs continues through Monday with Aquarius (the legs) ruling today and Monday. As always, the so-so signs aren’t particularly fertile but they aren’t destructive either — just so-so.

Outstanding planting returns Tuesday and Wednesday when the sign moves to Pisces (the feet), one of the four most fertile signs. With the moon in the dark phase you’re planting below-ground producers wherever you may be planting or participating in dark moon activities.

All planting anywhere and everywhere should cease Thursday and Friday when the sign moves to Aries (the head), one of the two killing signs. Reserve these days for killing, deadening or cultivating — anything but planting.

Saturday and next Sunday find the fertile sign Taurus (the neck) in force with the moon in the dark phase.

Making changes

With the dark moon coming to rule today, there will be three full days and a piece of today to make changes. As I’ve noted, the full moon comes into force at 2:09 p.m. today and will be at full strength Monday through Wednesday with the sign in first Aquarius on Monday and then two days under Pisces (the feet) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

These days fit the formula perfectly: dark moon with the signs going out of the body past any parts that function, specifically the legs and feet. If you have changes to make like stopping smoking, starting a diet or exercise program, weaning animals or children — anything that qualifies as a change — these days are the most propitious for those activities.

Just be underway by Thursday when the sign moves to Aries even though the moon is still in the dark phase.
