Planting by the Signs: September at a glance

By Philip Case, Published:

Planting in the unprotected outdoor garden is over for this year except if you want to plant some radishes today or Monday or spinach by Sept. 15.

Of course gardening doesn’t have to end now. With the use of cold frames, greenhouses and other protection if needed, it can be extended far into the fall, even the early winter.

So throughout this, when I write “plant” I mean in some sort of protected environment or, if outdoors, where the plants can be protected. Now, I don’t have to write that every time you see the word “plant!”

Here’s September’s phases of the moon and signs of the zodiac overview.

The moon

September begins and ends with the moon in the light phase. The light moon rules until the full (or dark) moon comes to rule at 9:38 p.m. Sept. 8. During this period plant only those things that produce above the ground — except don’t plant at all, anywhere, when one of the killing signs — Aries (the head) or Leo (the heart) — rules.

The full or dark moon rules until the new — or light — moon returns at 2:14 a.m. Sept. 24. During this period plant only those veggies that produce below the ground — except, again, when Aries or Leo is in force; those dates are below.

Light moon: Plant above ground producers through most of Sept. 8, then most of Sept. 24 until the full moon 6:51 a.m. Oct. 8.

Dark moon: Plant below ground producers Sept. 9 through Sept. 23.

Check “General Tips” for dark- and light-moon activities.

The signs

Remember: Check to see if the moon is in the light or dark phase (information above) before proceeding with planting, or other activities, indoors or out.

Fertile signs: The most fertile signs in the zodiac rule these days: Scorpio (the secrets), Sept. 1, 27-28; Pisces (the feet), Sept. 8-9; Taurus (the neck), Sept. 12-13; and Cancer (the breast), Sept. 17-18. There are nine days this month ruled by the fertile signs — Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus and Cancer.

Killing signs: No planting, transplanting, or dealing with things you want to thrive should occur on these days. Reserve them for cultivating, cleaning out fencerows — anything but planting: Aires (the head), Sept. 10-11 and Leo (the heart), Sept. 19-21. There are five killing days ruled by either Aries or Leo. Don’t plant when these signs are in force.

So-so days: These aren’t particularly fertile nor destructive, just so-so: Sagittarius (the thighs), Sept. 2-3, 29-30; Capricorn (the knees), Sept. 4-5; and Aquarius (the legs), Sept. 6-7. There are eight days ruled by the three so-so signs.

Flowering days: These are “bloom days” and well suited for planting your fall flowers — and you don’t need to worry about frosts or freezes since you’re not eating them and when the last freeze hits they’re done anyway. Virgo (the bowels) will rule Sept. 22-23; and Libra (the reins) is up for Sept. 24-26. There are five flowering days this month.

Gemini days: Gemini rules the arms and is in force Sept. 14-16. These are bean days but we are past the time to safely plant beans since they cannot stand cold weather or frost. But in a few months, believe it or not, we’ll be talking about planting peas in your very early 2015 spring garden.

General tips

Again, here are a few general tips for activities other than planting:

> If you have gravel to pour on a drive or roadway, do that in the light of the moon, Sept. 1 through most of Sept. 8 and most of Sept. 24 through Oct. 7. Same applies for stones on a garden path: Place them when the moon is in the light phase so they don’t sink.

> If you’re setting fence posts, do that in the light of the moon so the posts don’t sink.

> If you’re putting on a new shingle roof, do that when the moon’s in the dark phase so that the shingles stick down and don’t curl up on the ends.

> If you have changes to make like stopping smoking, starting a diet or exercise program, weaning small animals or children, scheduling elective surgery — anything that requires a change — here’s the formula: The moon in the dark phase and the signs are going out of the body, past anything that “functions” so that means thighs, knees, legs and feet — Sagittarius through Pisces.

There is only one perfect day that fits the formula this month: Sept. 9. The moon will have moved to the dark phase on the 8th and the sign is in Pisces (the feet). It’s only one day, for sure, but it’s better than none — and we’re going to have a couple of months coming up where that will be the case — no absolutely perfect days.

In my opinion, the alternative to perfect days are days when the signs are going out of the body past anything that functions, even if the moon is in the light phase. In September that would be Sept. 2-8 (Sagittarius through Pisces) and then, of course, Sept. 9 — the perfect day.

Signs, phases for this week

Here’s this week’s planting by the phases of the moon and signs of the zodiac information so you don’t have to go through all of the September overview to pick it out.

The moon is in the light phase now and will continue until 9:38 p.m. Sept. 8. This is for above-ground producers and light moon activities.

The signs find Scoprio (the secrets) in force today and Monday followed by our monthly series of so-so signs that continues through next Sunday. Specifically, Sagittarius through Aquarius/thighs through legs. Not good/not bad — just so-so.
