Gaines, Louisville surge by St. Louis

By LINDA YOUNKIN State Journal Sports Writer Published:

LOUISVILLE - Reece Gaines went from bricklayer to magician in a matter of minutes, leading Louisville's basketball team to a 73-54 over Saint Louis Saturday at Freedom Hall.

Gaines went 1-for-7 from the field in the first half, and as a team the Cardinals shot just 23.8 percent (5-for-21).

U of L coach Rick Pitino had a small piece of advice for his senior guard at halftime.

"Take better shots," Pitino said. "I told him you're not off. You're not taking good shots."

In the second half Gaines couldn't miss, hitting all seven of his shots and finishing with a game-high 23 points.

"He did some things that were really impressive in the second half," Pitino said, "driving, stopping on a dime, and shooting that mid-range jump shot."

Which is just what Gaines wanted to do.
