BEREA - Survive and advance.

According to Frankfort High boys basketball coach Scott Chalk, that's what tournament time is all about.

And that's just what the Panthers did Thursday, beating Lexington Christian 87-82 in the opening round of the 11th Region All "A" Classic at Berea Community High School.

FHS plays Model tonight at 6:30, followed by Sayre versus Berea at 8. The championship game will be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

"We knew this wouldn't be an easy game," Chalk said. "They don't have the best record, but they've play a tough schedule. They were ready to play tonight, and they played well. They had a great game plan.

"They took it right to us," he added, "and they shot the three well."

But it wasn't quite enough to knock off the defending All "A" regional champions.

Frankfort led 18-15 after the first quarter and scored the first two baskets of the second period for a 22-15 lead. When Joe Hyatt hit a three-pointer with 4:21 left in the first half the Panthers led 30-24, but LCA went on a 13-4 run for a 37-34 advantage.

Chris Current and Aaron Dunaway scored for Frankfort in the closing seconds for a 38-37 lead, but Chris Wade hit a three-pointer from beyond midcourt at the buzzer to give the Eagles the lead, 40-38, at halftime.
