Three still alive in state wrestling meet

The state wrestling tournament got off to a slow start for the local competitors but picked up in the first round of the consolation bracket Thursday at the Civic Center.

Three of the six local wrestlers who qualified for state - Franklin County's Brandon Schreiner, Brandon Bailey and Jon Neville - went 1-1 on the tournament's opening day.

Two others - Western Hills' Jimmy Mullins and FCHS' Brandon Tingle - were eliminated after losing two matches. David Alexander of Franklin County was also eliminated from the tournament when he didn't make weight Thursday, weighing in one-quarter of a pound over 160.

Campbell County leads in the team standings after Thursday's action with 51 points, followed by South Oldham with 46.5 points. Woodford County, the defending champion, is in third place with 45.5 points, and rounding out the top five are Trinity with 42 points and Larue County with 36.

The tournament continues today with two sessions. The first session, starting at 9 a.m., includes the second round of the championship and consolation brackets. The second session, starting at 4:30 p.m., will be for the third round of the championship bracket and the third and fourth rounds of the consolation bracket.
