Western Hills' softball program lost nearly a whole team from last season, leaving a talented but inexperienced group behind.
The Lady Wolverines lost 10-1 to Madison Central Tuesday at Lakeview Park, but they stayed with the 12th-ranked Lady Indians for most of the game.
"We stayed close for five innings," WHHS coach Enoch Welch said, "despite the fact we're a young team without a lot of varsity experience. If we stay positive, patient and persistent with them, we'll be OK."
Western Hills graduated nine players off last year's team, including nearly all of its starters. Returning players with significant varsity experience include Andrea Green, Marissa Brewer, Courtney Wiard and Mollie Wade.
"We have talent," Welch said, "but right now we just need time on the ballfield. Their attitude is great. We have a great bunch of young ladies. We're green right now, but by the end of the year we hope to be green and silver."
