The Western Hills Wolverines jumped out on top of Franklin County 4-1 after one inning Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Capital City Classic at WHHS.
But the Wolverines couldn't do much after that as the Flyers came back behind the relief pitching of Brandon Bailey and a strong hitting performance, earning an 8-4 win.
"The first inning was just great," WHHS coach Craig Fry said. "But after that we didn't hit and we weren't as aggressive at the plate.
"I guess we relaxed."
Play in the tournament continues today with the Flyers hosting Woodford County and Western Hills playing Frankfort High at Capitol View Park. Both games are set for 5 p.m.
After giving up a run in the first inning on doubles by Bryan Scott and Bailey, the Wolverines sent eight players to the plate in the bottom half of the inning.
Against FCHS starting pitcher Jordan Howard, Western Hills picked up four runs on four hits.
Bryan Gaines and Gary Thompson each doubled and Joey Wainscott and Chris Wade singled for Western Hills while a walk and an error aided the Wolverines.
