Frankfort High track star Jackie Gordon continues to amaze.
Just three days after FHS track and field coach Frank Miklavcic expressed concerns that Gordon might be leveling off in her senior year, Gordon uncorked a shocker at a meet Tuesday in Louisville, running a 2:16.52 800 that shattered her personal record by five seconds.
"Holly Geers (of South Oldham) had a 35-yard lead with 150 meters to go, and Jackie just ran her down," Miklavcic said with a smile on Wednesday. "Jackie ran even splits - 68, 68."
Gordon doesn't lack faith in her abilities, but she said her hopes for the 800 this spring were in the range of 2:18.
Gordon credited Geers for spurring her to a record time.
"It had a lot to do with the pace Holly set," Gordon said. "Obviously if I were out there by myself, I couldn't have done that. That, and my will to just keep getting better drove me past her at the end."
It was a strong will that kept Gordon from faltering even when Geers built that seemingly insurmountable lead halfway through the second lap.
"She was out there not quite 50 meters," Gordon said of Geers. "There were times I thought she might lengthen her stride and go, but she never really did. She just kind of kept her same pace. So as far as I was concerned, she didn't have enough on me, knowing the type of finisher that I am. I never gave up on trying to win it."
