Prep tennis season is winding down this week as local teams are gearing up for next week's regional tournament.
For Frankfort High girls coach Sherrill Smith, the season has been an enjoyable one.
"I've just got a great group of girls," Smith said of his squad, which dropped to 4-4 on the season after a 6-3 loss Wednesday to Western Hills at East Frankfort Park. "It has been an enjoyable experience for me in my third year. The girls are always striving to get better.
"I'm really happy with this team," Smith added. "We've had several matches canceled due to the weather, but the girls keep working hard."
Smith's lineup includes experience and promising youth. Seniors Julia Howley and Anna Barnard are the top two singles players, respectively. Both normally team up at No. 1 doubles.
"Both Julia and Anna are excellent senior captains," Smith said. "Julia has really picked up her game in the offseason and she's very aggressive at the net.
"Anna is more of a baseline player and she's become very consistent there."
Howley is 5-3 playing No. 1 singles while Barnard is 3-3.
Sophomore Brittany Howard has shown promise at the No. 3 spot, according to Smith. She has the best record of any Lady Panther at 5-2.
