Perfect defense, clutch hitting and a solid pitching performance added up to a big softball win for Western Hills Thursday afternoon at Lakeview Park.
The Lady Wolverines shut out a good Lexington Catholic team 3-0 to improve to 8-11 on the season.
"This is a confidence builder for us," said junior catcher Marissa Brewer of the win. "We don't get to beat Catholic much in sports at our school and we haven't beaten them in softball much."
Catholic is slightly down this year with an 11-9 record. But the Lady Knights are young and have just one senior on the team.
"They're looked up to by a lot of schools, so this is a good win," said junior Mollie Wade.
The Lady Wolverines played error-free defense in the field, and sophomore pitcher Courtney Wiard helped her cause with a three-hitter.
"Courtney absolutely dominated this game and the team we just beat is no slouch," WHHS coach Enoch Welch said. "She pitched a great game.
"When Marissa called the pitches, she mixed them up really well and Courtney put them right where Marissa called them."
