Ballard stops Panthers

The Frankfort High Panthers marched on through their grueling baseball schedule Wednesday, facing 10th-ranked Ballard at Capitol View Park.

The Bruins, one of six top 20 opponents Frankfort has played this season, went on to win 16-4, but the Panthers didn't play badly.

"We gave up three or four unearned runs, but we didn't play that poorly," Frankfort coach Joe Peach said. "Ballard just hit the ball all over the park."

The Bruins cranked out 19 hits, including two home runs. They were headed toward a five-inning mercy rule, but Frankfort managed to keep the game going.

Down 13-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the game looked to be over as the first two Panthers got out. But Robert Gates reached on an error, Paul Auberry singled and Joe Hyatt walked to load the bases.

Senior Cam Howell then launched a grand slam to right centerfield to make it 13-4.

Ballard added three runs in the seventh inning to round out the scoring.

"I'm glad we came back that one inning," Peach said. "Cam was solid today at the plate."
