Midway softball season ends

Special to The State Journal Published:

The Midway Lady Eagles softball team finished the season strong, going 6-11 in the last three weeks of the season and making a great run in the conference tournament.

"We have a lot of talent coming back next year and a lot of talent coming in as freshmen which should prove to be a winning combination for Midway softball in 2004," said first-year head softball coach Greg Dempsey. The Eagles finished the 2003 season at 14-39 overall and 7-20 in conference play.

The Lady Eagles started play in Week 7 against Saint Catharine. Midway lost both games by a 5-1 score, and the Lady Eagles lost both games of a doubleheader against Campbellsville, 6-5 and 2-1.

Midway split in a doubleheader with NCAA II opponent Centre College, losing the first game 7-0 and winning the second game 5-4.

Midway opened play in Week 8 with two wins over Lindsey Wilson, 10-1 and 6-4, and picked up two more wins against conference foe Asbury, 16-3 and 15-4. The Lady Eagles lost two games to conference foe Berea College, 9-8 and 14-6, and dropped two games against conference foe Mid-Continent 4-3 and 9-0.

In Week 9 Midway went 1-2 in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament play. Midway lost its first game in the tournament to third-seeded and eventual tournament runner-up Spalding, 10-3. The Lady Eagles beat Asbury 9-1 in Game 2 of tournament play and lost their third game to top-seeded Brescia 3-2.
