Over the years, Franklin County's softball team has been known as an offensive power.
On Friday Assumption pitcher Mindon Whalen shut the Lady Flyers down with a perfect game at Sally Gaines Field. The Rockets won 3-0 with Whalen giving up no hits, no walks and striking out seven batters. Assumption committed no errors.
"We didn't hit the ball well," FCHS coach Tracy Spickard said. "We very rarely got it out of the infield. We've just kind of been going through the motions this week, especially last night (a 2-1 loss at Lexington Catholic) and today.
"Last weekend we went to Owensboro Catholic and played the best game we've played all year against Marshall County (a 4-1 victory)," she added. "We executed well. It was just the best game we've played. Then we came back and had to play Owensboro Catholic, and they were No. 1 in the state. There was no score through four innings. They came back to win (2-0), but we proved we can play with anyone on the state."
In the same tournament the Lady Flyers were leading North Hardin with two outs and two strikes on the batter in the bottom of the seventh inning. North Hardin tied the game at 2-all, and it went 13 innings before the Lady Trojans won 3-2.
