NEW CASTLE - Western Hills senior distance runner Jonathan Thomas showed incredible resiliency and Franklin County senior sprinter Nick Burchfield received some well deserved vindication on the final day of the Class AA Region 3 track and field meet.

Thomas and Burchfield's efforts highlighted a solid day for both schools as both runners were double winners in their respective events Thursday at Henry County High School.

Western Hills boys had the best showing of the locals in the team totals, tying for third place with North Bullitt at 65 points each. Bullitt East won the region with 127 points, followed by Fairdale with 82. FCHS finished in ninth place.

The Lady Flyers finished sixth with 34 points. Mercy won the girls side with 128 points and Bullitt East was a distant runner-up. Sara Jackson, the lone female participant for Western Hills, placed in the top five in both of her events.

"I couldn't have asked for a better day," WHHS coach Pam Andrews said of her team's effort. "We came out ready to run today and if you're going to do great things, you might as well do them at the end of the season."

Joining Thomas at next week's state meet will be Matt Hebert, who was runner-up in the 400 and the 800, and the 4 by 400 relay unit of Hebert, Tyler Combess, Victor Howard and O.J. Oleka, which also finished second.

Hebert, Combess, Vamsi Kuchipudi and Thomas will compete in the 4 by 800 relay, which the team won on Tuesday.
