WHHS splits

By LINDA YOUNKIN State Journal Sports Writer Published:

Western Hills' hitting is coming along, and that helped the Wolverines split two baseball games Thursday.

WHHS scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Scott County 11-10 in the first game, then lost 14-7 to Spencer County in the nightcap. Both games were played at Western Hills.

"We are hitting the ball," WHHS coach Craig Fry said. "We're starting to be more consistent."

The Wolverines led Scott County 10-5 after six innings only to see the Cardinals score five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

In the bottom of the inning Joey Wainscott walked, went to third when Bryan Gaines reached on an error, and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

""We needed that," Fry said of the win. "I'm disappointed with the way we played the second game, but I'm happy we're hitting the ball."

Scott County scored two runs in both the first and second innings for a 4-0 lead in the first game. WHHS tied the game with four runs in the third inning with three walks, a hit batsman and a single by Jake Arnold.
