LEXINGTON - Frankfort High senior Alex Oder has never minded the target she wears on her back every time she steps in the discus ring.
But even Oder admitted the thought of caving in to the pressure at her final KHSAA Class A state track and field championship was lurking in the back of her mind.
"It's tough for Alex because there's pressure in that she's the person everyone else comes here to beat," said Frankfort coach Frank Miklavcic, referring to that proverbial target.
But champions know how to handle the pressure and that's just what Oder did, crushing the Class A field for a fourth straight year in her marquee event Friday at the University of Kentucky.
Oder put a stamp on her prolific track and field career with a fifth place finish Saturday in the shot put event with a throw of 29-10.5.
But the discus is Oder's time to shine.
Her second toss proved to be her best in the final, good for 113 feet, 10 inches, and it easily bested three-time runner-up Alisha Shipp of St. Mary, who turned in a throw of 105 feet.
"I'm really pleased with my effort today," Oder said Friday.
She had reason to be.
