Heartache ends for Lady Flyers

By SUSAN RIDDELL State Journal Sports Writer Published:

Finally.

That seems to be everyone's reaction to the Franklin County softball team finally getting to the Promised Land of Hopkinsville and the state softball tournament.

Who could blame them?

After years of close calls and narrow misses, the Lady Flyers finally broke through with an exciting 4-3 win over three-time defending regional champion Madison Central Thursday night.

The win, no doubt, ended years of frustration for head coach Tracy Spickard and her team, which has always been among the favorites to win the 11th Region title but never has done so.

This will be Franklin County's second trip to the state tournament, in fact. FCHS advanced all the way to the slow pitch state quarterfinals in 1987 under then-coach Sally Gaines before falling to eventual champion Mercy.

It's been heartache ever since.

Franklin County returned all 10 starters from that 1987 team but was upset by George Rogers Clark in the regional championship the following year.

That loss started a string of five regional championship disappointments. FCHS lost again in 1989, another narrow defeat, this time to Lafayette.
