Hillcrest Baptist wins Little League crown

Hillcrest Baptist Church came out of the winners bracket to win the Little League girls softball tournament Wednesday evening at Lakeview Park.

Hillcrest defeated Terry Paige Plumbing 5-2 in the championship game. Terry Paige Plumbing, playing with just nine players, reached the title game by beating Frankfort Fire Department and EMS 6-3 in the losers bracket final played just before the championship game.

Hillcrest opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with two runs. Elizabeth Wainscott and Tara Arnold both drew walks and scored on a single by Ellyssa Wise.

Terry Paige Plumbing got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Kayla Mills walked, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.

The score stayed 2-1 until the third inning when Hillcrest picked up a run on two errors.

Neither team scored again until the sixth inning. Wainscott led off with a single for Hillcrest, stole second and third, and scored on a one-out triple by April Lancaster. Arnold then grounded out to second, scoring Lancaster for a 5-1 advantage.
