Cardinal Office takes NSA title

State Journal Staff Report Published:

Cardinal Office tied the game in the seventh inning, then scored three runs in the eighth to win the NSA girls softball league tournament championship Tuesday, beating CLS Screen Printing 4-1 at Lakeview Park.

The two teams played in the winners bracket final Sunday with Cardinal Office winning 3-2, and Tuesday's game was nearly as close.

CLS scored its run in the third inning. With two outs Brittney Brewer drew a walk. Sara Jackson got on base when the third strike got away from the catcher, and Brewer went to third on the play. Kellie Cash then reached on an error, scoring Brewer. A strikeout ended the inning.

Neither team mounted a serious threat through the middle innings, and it wasn't until the seventh inning that Cardinal Office got its leadoff batter on base.

That happened when Danielle Thomas beat out a bunt for a single. Amanda Epling hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Thomas out at second, but Epling stole second base and scored on a single by Whitney Zeigler to tie the game at 1-all.

CLS went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
