The Frankfort 14-year-old all-stars suffered two heartbreaking defeats Sunday in the NSA state softball tournament at Lakeview Park.
That team was the only local all-star team to advance to Sunday's final day of action. The Dixie Chics, a traveling team with several Frankfort players, was eliminated early Sunday morning as well in the 18-under tournament.
The 14s played the Speedmasters in the winners bracket semifinals Sunday afternoon and led most of the way, before falling 6-5.
It didn't get any better for Frankfort as the 14s fell 4-3 in the next game to the Slammers to get eliminated from the tournament.
The Lady Sluggers out of Louisville won two games over the Speedmasters in the finals to claim the championship.
Frankfort was leading the Speedmasters 5-3 going into the bottom of the final inning but couldn't hang on.
Elizabeth Irwin got things going for the Speedmasters with a walk. The next batter singled and error on a bunt loaded the bases. Frankfort pitcher Cassie Aldridge struck out Stacey Anderson for the first out and Irwin was forced out at home for the second out on the next play.
Still with the bases loaded, Michelle Elder walked to score a run, making it 5-4. Sharon Brill followed with a two-out single to left field, scoring two runs to end the game.
Frankfort had led 4-0 after its first at-bat. Katrina Baltic led off with a base hit and she scored on a triple by Brittney Brewer, who later scored on an error. Stephanie Wade reached on a hit and Aldridge on an error. Wade scored an that error and Aldridge went to third. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Bullock.
