The Frankfort 13-year-old Babe Ruth all-star team was the one looking like a winners bracket champion Monday night in the finals of the District 8 baseball tournament at Franklin County High School.
But that wasn't the case. That title went to Oldham County, largely because Frankfort gave one away to Oldham in the first game of the tournament, nearly a week ago.
That heartbreaking loss sent Frankfort to the losers bracket but Frankfort stormed back with three straight wins, setting up a rematch with Oldham.
In the finals, revenge and confidence teetered back and forth in the minds of the Frankfort players and coaches Monday, as they cruised to two victories over Oldham County to win the championship.
"We ate humble pie the first game against Oldham County," Frankfort coach Eddie Leitch said of the 10-9 defeat last Wednesday in which Frankfort blew a late three-run lead. "We didn't like the taste at all, and we were more motivated to come out tonight and show them who was the better team."
It's confidence like that which paid off for the Frankfort team all night as it won the first game 12-5 and took the second and decisive one 8-5.
"We pumped them up all week and maybe we gave the kids too much confidence early," Leitch added, "but their confidence showed tonight in the teamwork they displayed, and it showed when they went up to the plate."
Frankfort now moves on the Babe Ruth East Kentucky State Championship, playing Wednesday night a 8 versus the District 4 winner. The tournament will be played at Shillito Park in Lexington.
