The Frankfort Blue All Stars finished an impressive third in the 11-12 Cal Ripken State Tournament this weekend in Mt. Sterling.
Frankfort opened with a 15-0 shellacking of Fern Creek in the opening game on Thursday but then fell into the losers bracket with a 4-2 loss to Fern Creek on Friday night.
Blue came back Saturday to beat Harrison County 2-1 and Lake Cumberland 10-5 to set up a rematch against Fern Creek in the losers bracket final on Sunday.
Frankfort led that rematch 5-1 through five innings only to be dealt a heartbreaking 6-5 defeat.
"It was almost like being snake bitten against that club," Frankfort coach Buddy Ritchie said. "The first game we lose a ball in the lights to give up the go-ahead runs, and today we're leading 5-1 and get beat in the sixth inning.
"I was still very proud of these kids all weekend," Ritchie added. "I just feel bad that we didn't get to the final game. But you give us that situation and we win it nine out of 10 times. These kids never give up. They always play hard."
Blue still has two tournaments to play. They will compete this Thursday through Saturday in the East Frankfort Kiwanis Tournament at State Stadium. Frankfort opens at 4 p.m. Thursday against Nicholas County.
Blue will also play the following weekend in a tournament at Anderson County.
