LEXINGTON - The Frankfort 18-under baseball team battled its way out of the losers bracket this past weekend in the East State baseball tournament at Shillito Park, only to fall in the championship game to Middletown.
Frankfort would have needed to beat Middletown twice to claim the title, but Middletown rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win the championship game 10-5 on its first try.
Frankfort scored four runs in its first at-bat, all coming with two outs.
After the first two batters grounded out, Gary Thompson walked and scored on a ball hit by Brandon Bailey which was misplayed in the outfield. Bailey took second on the error and third on a single by Tyler Estill.
Bubba Martin then singled in Bailey with Estill advancing to third. Another Middletown error put Martin on second. Both Estill and Martin scored on a double by Shane Slattery.
Middletown answered with one run in the second and two in the third inning.
In the fifth, Middletown took the lead on a bases-loaded triple by Jason Carroll. A double play ended the threat with Frankfort trailing by just two runs.
