Frankfort Blue rallied against Shelby County to win the 42nd annual East Frankfort Kiwanis Invitational baseball tournament Saturday afternoon at State Stadium.
Shelby, winner of the tournament the past two years, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Frankfort took control of the game with a seven-run second inning and went on to win 10-4.
"They played well," Blue coach Buddy Ritchie said, "but they've played well the three weeks we've been together. I wish there was some way we could make some adjustments and win that other game at state, but we bounced back this week and I'm proud of them for that."
Frankfort Blue finished third in the state tournament, falling 6-5 in the consolation bracket final after having a 5-1 lead.
Shelby and Frankfort Blue met earlier in the day in the championship bracket final with Frankfort winning 10-1. Shelby then defeated Anderson County 6-5 in the consolation bracket final to reach the championship game.
In the championship contest Shelby opened the game with two strikeouts, but Jon Collins, Vince Walker and Tyler Yount all singled, Frankfort committed two errors, and the visitors had a 2-0 lead.
Shelby threatened in the second when Kyle Abbott led off with a double. After a strikeout Eric Standafer singled, sending Abbott to third. Michael Stearman followed with a fly ball to leftfield that was caught by Blue's Deron Hicks.
Abbott tried to score on the fly ball, but Hicks threw him out at the plate with catcher Mike Satterwhite making the tag for the third out of the inning.
