The fifth annual Flyer Classic kicks off the boys high school golf season Monday at Juniper Hill.
This year's tournament will feature 28 teams, including most of the top teams in the state with the exception of St. Xavier and Covington Catholic. Franklin County will be fielding two teams, and Western Hills and Frankfort High will also be competing.
Madison Central will be back to defend its team title, having won last year's tournament in a three-team playoff with Russell and Elizabethtown. The Flyers won the tournament its first three years.
"Madison Central returns a strong team," FCHS coach James Myers said. "They have two of their top three players back from last year, and they have one of the state's better junior players in Josh Winkler."
Myers lists George Rogers Clark, Oldham County, Christian Academy of Louisville and Henry Clay as other top teams in the tournament.
"Oldham County is going to bring a very, very good team," Myers said. "They'll compete with St. X for that region. They return four out of five players from a good team last year.
"Then you have traditional powers like Taylor County, Somerset, Dunbar," he added. "They may not be as strong as in the past, but they're great programs that compete year in and year out to go to state."
