For the second time in five weeks, a Frankfort High basketball coach has left to coach at Franklin County.
This time, it's girls coach Joey Thacker, who was also the football coach at FHS. He will take over the girls basketball program at FCHS after being announced as coach this week.
"We're honored to have Joey as our girls coach," FCHS athletic director Deron McDonald said. "We expect him to turn things around for us."
Thacker's hiring comes on the heels of Roger Newton's departure. Newton was hired as coach in late June but recently resigned to remain at his job at the University of Kentucky.
It also comes on the heels of former Frankfort High boys basketball coach Scott Chalk departing for FCHS as the new Flyer boys coach.
McDonald said the recent hirings have not been made in an effort to cause a rift between to two schools, but have happened mainly because the timing has been right for both Chalk and Thacker to take their respective shots at rebuilding programs which both have been on the decline.
"We're not trying to damage Frankfort High in any way," McDonald said. "Scott and Joey both had a lot of success at Frankfort High and were both looking for larger schools. We expect them to do here what they did at Frankfort."
"I am very fortunate to be afforded an opportunity to work at a place that is so rich in tradition," Thacker said about FCHS. "Obviously there is a larger pool to draw from and most of these players have played together for awhile. I want to thank Coach McDonald and (principal) Sharon Collett for allowing me to be a part of it."
