The Franklin County girls golf team finished the opening week of the fall season in style with a third place finish in the Gene Hilen Invitational golf tournament Saturday at Juniper Hill.

"We're off to a very good start," FCHS coach Drex Davis said of his team.

The Lady Flyers, who won the Fuzzy Zoeller tournament earlier in the week, tied for third place with Lexington Christian and Monroe County, but earned third based on having the best fifth individual score.

Each team uses five golfers, with the top four scores counting for the team score.

Russell County cruised to the championship with a 305, followed by Russell at 326. FCHS, LCA and Monroe all posted scores of 341.

Western Hills earned a 405 and Franklin County II a 421.

Monroe County's Marci Turner was medalist with a 7-under 67 and Russell's Laura Caniff birdied the final three holes to finish second with a 68. Glasgow's Taryn Durham and Pulaski County's Lauren Scholl tied with a 70 each and Woodford County's Mallory Blackwelder was fifth with a 72.

The best local finish was Franklin County's Rachel Oliver, who tied for ninth place with a 78.
