For Western Hills boys golf coach Jeff Bibb, the best part of the golf season started Monday.
WHHS played a tri-match with Frankfort High and Bryan Station at Juniper Hill Monday with the Wolverines winning with a score of 150. FHS was second at 169, and the Defenders shot 221.
"I just think this is high school golf," Bibb said about his team's first regular-season match. "It's the way you do it in any other sport. You practice after school, come to matches. I choose matches because I think it's more fun for the team than a grueling tournament with 22 other teams on a Saturday."
The Wolverines actually opened the season a week earlier in the Flyer Classic at Juniper, one of three tournaments on the team's schedule. Western Hills finished 21st in that tournament with a score of 333.
"I was disappointed at the Flyer Classic," Bibb said, "really disappointed. After the way we'd played and practiced, and with our maturity, I thought we were ready to come in the top five of that, anyway.
"Today definitely showed a lot more of the character of this team versus the 330 or whatever we shot in the Flyer Classic," he added.
Sophomore Blake Baker led WHHS with a 36 Monday, followed by Sean Rodgers and Chase Pratt each with a 37. Kyle Bibb shot 40, and Michael Burton shot 44.
Taylor Hicks led Frankfort with a 40, followed by Seth Dawson with a 41, Jordan Montgomery and Ben Lassiter each with a 44, and Adam Waldner shot 45.
