The second round of the Rotary Capital City Classic soccer tournament offered up two exciting games Thursday night with Western Hills and Franklin County both winning thrillers.
The Flyers knocked off Owen County 4-3 in a shootout in the opening contest, and the Wolverines squeaked by Frankfort High 1-0.
Play in the tournament concludes Saturday night. FCHS will meet Frankfort at 6 p.m. followed by WHHS and Owen at 8.
The Wolverines took their place in the driver's seat of the tournament Thursday. Western Hills is the only undefeated team at 2-0.
But the second win proved hard to come by as Frankfort gave a valiant effort, surrendering the game's only goal with 5:32 left in regulation.
"It was yet another hard-fought match between Western Hills and Frankfort," WHHS coach Gary Rue said of the win. "Again, we are lucky to get out with a win."
"It was a very typical Western Hills-Frankfort game," added FHS coach Sherrill Smith. "It was even on both sides and both teams gave it everything they had."
Both teams also had several scoring opportunities early, but Western Hills goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence and Frankfort keepers Jared Deaton and Than Culter made several nice saves throughout the match.
