John Brooks, who shared the first-round lead of the Governor's Open with Jon Tandy and Bill Burleson, finds himself leading by one stroke going into today's final round at Juniper Hill.
Brooks, Tandy and Burleson all shot one-under-par 69 Friday in the Governor's Open, and Brooks followed that with a 67 Saturday to lead by one stroke over Jason DeBold of Versailles. Tandy and John Bailey are another stroke back at 138.
At last year's Governor's Open Brooks and DeBold had a six-hole playoff to decide the amateur championship of the tournament, which was won by Brooks. This year the tournament has no pro division.
Brooks, DeBold, Tandy and Bailey are the only players under par. Bill Woolums, who shot a 73 in Friday's opening round, fired a three-under-par 67 Saturday to stand at even-par 140. Donnie Wainscott, Bruce Walters and Richard Hardesty all stand at 143. Walters, of Pikeville, has been the amateur champion of the Governor's Open nine times.
