Lady Panthers end skid

Frankfort High's girls soccer team got just what it needed heading into Monday's Class A regional tournament - a victory.

The Lady Panthers defeated Taylor County 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Sower Soccer Field. On Monday FHS plays Sayre in the semifinals of the 11th Region Class A tournament at Sower.

"I thought the midfield stepped up," FHS coach Jason Cunningham said. "We controlled the ball offensively. We had a couple of lapses, as you will in any game.

"All in all I was pleased," he added. "We'd lost three or four straight, and I thought the girls were starting to get a little bit down. I gave them Thursday off, and they came out to practice Friday and just seemed to be in good spirits. A lot of credit for that goes to Jordan Willhoit and the other girls. They practiced hard, but they had an upbeat attitude, and that made the difference in preparing for this game."

Whitney Zeigler scored the game's first goal with 20:38 left in the first half, and the score stayed 1-0 at halftime.

With 30:32 left in the game Sophie Smith, covering the far post, took a crossing pass from Zeigler and scored for a 2-0 FHS lead. The Lady Panthers' final score came with 1:38 remaining on an own goal that a Taylor County defender deflected into the net. Danielle Thomas, who made the cross before the goal, was credited with an assist.

"I think we're talking more," Smith, a senior, said about this year's team, "and we're playing more as one. Instead of 11 people playing on their own, we play more as one. We've changed since last year. Last year we were a good team, but this year everyone gets along and everyone's close friends."
