The Frankfort High boys soccer team gave a great effort Tuesday night versus the state's No. 3 team but fell short, falling to Rowan County 2-0 in the opening round of the Frankfort High Invitational.
The tournament was played at the Bellepoint soccer complex. In the other opener, Grant County defeated Owen County 3-1.
Frankfort will meet Owen County Thursday night in the consolation game while Rowan and Grant will play for the championship at 8 p.m. Those games will be played at Sower Soccer Field.
"I'm proud of the way we played against the third-ranked team in the state," Frankfort coach Sherrill Smith said.
The Panthers played a solid first half, outshooting Rowan County 7-2. But Tanner Yess' goal for the Vikings midway through the period gave Rowan a 1-0 lead at the half.
"We played very well in the first half," Smith said. "It could have (ended in) a 1-0 game."
But late in the second half, Rowan striker Nick Angel dribbled the ball up the middle of the field, closely defended by Frankfort's Shawn Goins. As the two neared the Panther goal, keeper Jared Deaton came out in an attempt to get the ball, but Angel bounced it in past Deaton for a 2-0 lead.
