The Western Hills boys soccer team used two direct kicks to defeat East Jessamine Thursday night 2-0 in Nicholasville. In the first half, the Wolverines missed on several good scoring opportunities before O.J. Oleka was taken down from behind in the penalty area. Tim Sayles' penalty kick proved to be the game-winner.
In second half, Oleka set up the next score when he was tackled from behind just outside of the penalty area. Lane Wilkinson's low bender around the wall skipped on the turf and handcuffed East Jessamine goalkeeper Jose Maldinado to allow the ball to pass over the line for the second score.
Aaron Lawrence registered his sixth shutout of the season as the Wolverines improved their record to 11-2-2, sandwiching eight wins around one tie in their last nine games. East Jessamine fell to 2-11.
In the earlier game, the Western Hills junior varsity team notched its first win of the season, matching the varsity score of 2-0. Chris Brown scored at the near post off a feed from Eric Breckel midway in the first half.
A minute later, Jonathon Engstrom lofted a 30-yarder just under the top post for the final 2-0 score. Chris Lee picked up his first career shutout in goal.
