The Frankfort Cup is about golf, but organizer David Hicks wants it to be about more than that.
"This is always fun," Hicks said Sunday after Juniper Hill defeated Frankfort Country Club 11 1/2-6 1/2 in two days of match play at Juniper. "That's a big key for me. We try to get the best golfers out, and it's match play. There are different intricacies that local golfers don't normally get to play."
This was the 10th year for the Frankfort Cup, which features 12-man teams from Juniper and FCC. On Saturday it was team match play, and Juniper had a 4 1/2-1 1/2 lead going into Sunday's round. Sunday's play was individual match play with Juniper winning 7-5.
"This has definitely brought players from the country club and Juniper Hill together," Hicks said, "and that's what it's supposed to do. That's what (Juniper Hill pro) Gene (Hilen) wanted when we started."
Playing for Juniper Hill were Hicks, Gary Sharfe, Bill Burleson, Curt Cochran, Tom Russell, Jimmy Simpson, Rex Fowler, Nick Rodgers, Marc Etherington, John Brooks, Jim Beirne and Jon Tandy.
The FCC players were Michael Burris, Richard Meyer, Donnie Wainscott, Troy Williams, Glenn Mitchell, Brad Nolan, Drex Davis, Bert Hawkins, Bob Amato, David Smith, Bill Woolums, Rob Hardy, Jack O'Nan, Bentley Bradshaw and Brad Meyer. Davis, Woolums and Hardy played Saturday, and O'Nan, Bradshaw and Brad Meyer played Sunday.
Hawkins was the only golfer from Frankfort Country Club to win both days. He teamed with Davis on Saturday to win 2-up over Rodgers and Etherington, and he won 1-up over Tandy on Sunday.
