Mustangs edge Wolverines

BUCKNER - North Oldham's boys soccer team won by the slimmest of margins, beating Western Hills 1-0 on a penalty kick in the Region 9 tournament Tuesday at Oldham County High School.

"I thought we played well," WHHS coach Gary Rue said. "We played hard. I thought we lost our focus. We tried to force things instead of playing our game.

"Their pressure caused us to do that," he added. "I think we were trying so hard, sometimes you can try too hard, and I think that played a part today."

North Oldham will play Oldham County Thursday at 7 p.m. for the regional championship. Oldham defeated Frankfort High 4-0 in Tuesday's first game.

The only goal of the second semifinal came on a penalty kick by Danny Walcott after the Wolverines were called for a trip in the box with 20:51 left in the first half.

That goal proved to be enough for the Mustangs, ranked seventh in the state at 15-3-2.
