Kentucky State quarterback Joe McBride had a miserable outing in last week's homecoming loss to Stillman College. On Saturday he was nearly perfect as KSU defeated Benedict College 31-19 in Columbia, S.C.
After throwing six interceptions last week, McBride threw five touchdown passes Saturday to account for all of the Thorobreds' scores. He went 13-for-18 for 218 yards with no interceptions.
"Joe came back with a great performance," KSU coach Donald Smith said.
The win keeps the Thorobreds undefeated in the SIAC at 5-0 with a 6-2 overall record.
"We dominated the whole game," Smith said. "The only thing I didn't like was the turnovers. We had three turnovers, and they got 13 points off of them."
McBride's first touchdown pass covered 18 yards to Derek Talbert with 10:59 left in the first quarter. Scott Lambert's point-after attempt failed, leaving KSU ahead 6-0. Benedict scored on a 26-yard field goal by Bryan Simon in the first quarter.
K-State went up 13-3 early in the second period on a 63-yard touchdown pass from McBride to Marcus Wright with Lambert kicking the extra point, but Benedict scored twice before halftime to tie the game. The first score came on a three-yard run by Jeffery Noble, and the second was a 23-yard field goal by Simon.
The third quarter belonged to KSU as McBride had a 28-yard TD pass to Dilone Richard and a seven-yard scoring pass to Gordon Miles.
