Local runners hope to shine in regions

State Journal Staff Report Published:

Cross country season is heading down the home stretch as regional meets begin on Saturday.

Frankfort High will compete in the Class A, Region 4 meet Saturday in Danville on the Admiral Stadium course while Franklin County and Western Hills will run at McNeely Lake Park in Louisville in the Class AA, Region 3 meet.

In Class A girls, host Danville and Trimble County are the teams to beat while Frankfort seniors Leesa Unger and Ryan Quire are the favorites to win the individual crown. Unger is ranked 10th in Class A and Quire is ranked 18th.

Frankfort will not field a full squad in either race. FHS' Rebecca Bessinger was lost for the season with an appendectomy and teammates Ashley Semones and Weyenshet Lake have other commitments.

On the boys side, the Panthers will likely be represented by senior Jason Tate. Jordan Moseley has not been cleared to run after a recent surgery. Danville eighth-grader Ross Hempel is the favorite in the boys race as is his team.
