DANVILLE - In Saturday's Class A, Region 4 girls cross country meet it was Frankfort High's Ryan Quire and Leesa Unger, and then everyone else.

Quire and Unger went 1-2 to qualify for next week's state meet at the Kentucky Horse Park.

"This is like my dream," said Quire after winning her first regional championship.

The two FHS seniors separated from the pack early in the 5,000-meter race, and after the first mile Quire went out on her own.

"The first mile they were side by side," FHS coach John Ritchart said. "When they got to about a mile and a half Ryan had an eight-second lead, and she just kind of opened it up from there."

Quire won with a time of 20:59.27, and Unger took second in 21:37.58. Trimble County's Jessica Sells finished third in 22:25.58.

"The girl who ran third was 30 or 40 seconds behind Leesa," Ritchart said, "so they were kind of out there on their own. They both kept up a good pace, and they both ran real nice races."

Unger was hindered by a hip injury that bothered her throughout Saturday's race.
