Three days before the state meet, the Franklin County boys cross country team members weren't thinking about their ultimate goal.
They were thinking about ultimate Frisbee instead.
"It's a way to keep them relaxed," FCHS coach Kelly McDaniel said of ultimate Frisbee. "And they have a lot of fun doing it."
The Flyers don't always play ultimate Frisbee, but Wednesday was the exception.
"In years past, it was always a treat when we got to play," senior runner Dustin Hughes said. "Today we got to play instead of practicing the whole time."
McDaniel points out however, that ultimate Frisbee can help runners just the same.
"Sometimes I wonder if the guys realize it or not, but this helps with their sprinting," McDaniel said. "They're going back and forth all the time so from that standpoint, it's beneficial."
You can also catch the runners playing ultimate Frisbee before meets from time to time as a way to stay loose.
If it's not the Frisbee, they're obviously doing something right.
The Flyers, who finished third in the Class AA, Region 3 meet a week ago, are the only local team in Saturday's state meet.
