The Franklin County girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 48-44 victory over Russell County Saturday in the Garrard County Classic.
Junior forward Carrie Bistline led the way for the Lady Flyers, now 1-2, with a double-double performance. She poured in 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
"She attacked the goal well," FCHS coach Joey Thacker said of Bistline. "She made some good plays, finishing off some shots and getting fouled, and she made her free throws."
Bistline was 8-for-9 at the foul line.
Franklin County jumped out on top early, leading 28-14 at the half.
"We did a good job controlling the tempo," Thacker said. "Anytime you hold a team to 14 points in a half that speaks well for your half-court defense. We were able to get the ball in the interior on offense and take some good shots, too."
The Lady Lakers made a run in the second half to get back in the game, but FCHS never relinquished the lead. The Lady Flyers sealed the win by going 13-for-19 at the free throw line.
It was the first loss of the season for Russell County, now 3-1, which came into the game averaging 71 points per outing.
