The Kentucky State men’s basketball team wrapped up the regular season Saturday with a home win over Morehouse College, 75-68, in overtime.
“We were more relaxed at the beginning of this game,” KSU’s William Marsh said. “We won two games and we’re trying to keep the train rolling before the conference tournament.”
Missed jumpers and turnovers plagued the Thorobreds in the early going as KSU remained scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. Earl Ruffin Jr. finally put KSU on the board with a jumper and an and-1.
Another scoreless stretch helped Morehouse extend its lead to 16-7 with 7:11 left in the half. Back-to-back threes by Troy Adams and a layup by John Gaston tied the game at 22 with three minutes left till halftime.
Morehouse ended the half on a 7-3 run and took a 29-25 lead into the locker room.
KSU took a 30-29 lead three minutes into the second half before a 12-1 run by the Tigers gave them a 41-31 lead with 12:59 left in the game.
Morehouse kept the Thorobreds at arm’s length for five minutes before surrendering the lead once more.
Austin Rich sank two free throws to tie things at 58 with 51 seconds remaining and Morehouse squandered several chances to score before time expired.
The two teams kept it close in OT as the score was 64-64 with 1:41 left to play. But a layup by Adams sparked an 11-4 KSU run down the stretch that sealed the victory.
Adams led KSU with 22 points while Marsh chipped in 15 and Rich added 14. Patrick Dawson and Ruffin Jr. both scored seven, Markus Montague had six, and Gaston and Fred Jones Jr. had two apiece.
Morehouse’s Shawn Allen led all scorers with 23 points.
KSU finished the season 12-14 (12-12 SIAC) and will travel to Atlanta on Feb. 28 to play in the SIAC Tournament.
