The Blue Jays were unbeatable in the Instructional League regular season and had no reason to stop winning when it came tournament time.
The Blue Jays rallied from three runs down to win the championship 8-5 over the Red Sox Wednesday night at Lakeview Park.
In the top of the first inning, the Red Sox scored three runs. With two outs, Sara Jones singled. Laken Ellis singled sending Jones to third. Madison Durham followed with a single scoring Jones and sending Ellis to third. Tru Thurman ripped a double that scored Ellis and Durham. Thurman was tagged out going to third to end the inning.
In the bottom of the first, Anna Woolums led off with a single. Emma Story followed with a single advancing Woolums to third. With one out, Darcey Burton hit a single that scored Woolums and sent Story to third. With two outs, Emma Rhoades hit a single that scored Story to put the Blue Jays within one run, 3-2. Burton was thrown out going home for the third out.
In the top of the second, Kiah Rowland led off with a single. With one out, Macy Dungan singled. Rowland was tagged out going to third for the second out. Lacey Hockensmith followed with a single to move Burton to second. The next batter made an out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the second, with their undefeated season at stake, Olivia Turner leads off with a single. Alyssa Mathers follows with a single to move Turner to third. Gracie Thacker hits a double down the line to score both runners. Trinity Yett follows with a single to move Thacker to third. Maddax Gortney followed with a single to score Thacker and move Yett to third. MaKayla Murphy hit a single to score Yett. Gortney was tagged out going to second to end the inning with the Blue Jays up 6-3.
In the top of the third, with two outs Madison Benassi hits a single but is left stranded as the next batter gets out.
In the bottom of the third, Woolums leads off with a single. The next two batters get out before Burton singles to move Woolums to third. Meadow Curry follows with a single to score Woolums putting the Blue Jays up 7-3 and moving Burton to second. Rhoades singles but Burton is thrown out going to third for the third out of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, with two outs, Durham hits a single. Thurman follows her with a single to move Durham to third. Rowland singles to score Durham and move Thurman to third making the score 7-4 in favor of the Blue Jays.
In the bottom of the fourth, Turner smashes a triple. Mathers singles to score Turner and extend the lead to 8-4.
In the top of the fifth, Dungan leads off with a single. The next batter grounds out advancing Dungan to second. Samantha Harrod follows with a single. Dungan is thrown out going home for the second out. Ciara Smith singles to move Harrod to second. Kaylee Hockensmith singles to move the runners but Smith was tagged out going to third for the third out.
In the bottom of the fifth, with the game close, the Blue Jays go down in order to keep the Red Sox’s hopes alive.
In the top of the sixth, with the pressure on to score four runs to tie the game, one out, Jones singles. Two batters later and down to their last out, Durham steps to the plate and singles moving Jones to third. Thurman follows with a single scoring Jones to cut the lead to three runs. On the play, Durham is thrown out coming home to end the game.
