FOP beats KECU in high-scoring game for Major League crown

FOP scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, capping off a wild game with a 13-12 victory over KECU for the championship of the Major League softball tournament Monday at Lakeview Park.

KECU reached the championship game with a 7-6 victory over Investors Heritage earlier Monday in the losers bracket final.

FOP 13, KECU 12

It was FOP that struck first in the championship game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first with walks to Shelby Brown and Taylor Boggs, a double by Danielle Hockensmith and a single from Katie Banta.

KECU took a 4-2 lead in the top of the second as Megan Wilhoite, Micaela Wilhoite and Reagan West all drew walks, Kathryn Edwards was hit by a pitch and Brianna Winkfield singled.

FOP came right back, tying the game in the bottom of the inning with a walk to Olivia Mitchell, singles by Molly Mitchell and Taylor Cheek and a triple by Taylor Risk.

The score stayed 4-4 until the fourth when KECU took a 10-4 lead in the top of the inning.

Megan Wilhoite led off with a walk and Micaela Wilhoite followed with a two-run home run. Morganne Burns and Kater Riddle both singled in the inning, Winkfield, Katie Norton and Devin Popp all walked, and Tristen McKeehan was hit by a pitch.

FOP pulled within 10-6 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs as Boggs, Grace Perkins, Molly Mitchell and Cheek all singled.

In the top of the fifth KECU went ahead 12-6 with a single by Megan Wilhoite, a triple by Micaela Wilhoite and a walk to Winkfield.

FOP came up with seven hits for its seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Christa Hall and Risk led off with back-to-back walks, and after advancing on a grounder to first by Raygan Shepard, both runners scored on a double by Mattie Hurst.

Brown followed with a double to score Hurst, and after a walk to Hockensmith Boggs, Banta and Perkins all singled.

A strikeout gave FOP its first out, but Molly Mitchell and Cheek followed with singles to close out the win.

Molly Mitchell and Cheek both singled three times for FOP, and Boggs, Banta and Perkins all hit two singles.

Hurst, Brown and Hockensmith each hit a double, and Risk hit a triple.

Banta and Hurst pitched for FOP and combined for six strikeouts.

Micaela Wilhoite hit a home run and triple for KECU, and Riddle, Megan Wilhoite, Winkfield and Burns each had a base hit.

Megan Wilhoite pitched a complete game and had three strikeouts.

LOSERS BRACKET FINAL

KECU 7, Investors Heritage 6

Micaela Wilhoite hit a double and single for KECU, and Kater Riddle and Devin Popp both singled twice.

Megan Wilhoite tripled, and Reagan West had a base hit.

Megan Wilhoite pitched and struck out eight batters.

Chandler Kelly hit a home run for Investors Heritage, Ashleigh Caudell hit two singles, and Amanda Boggs had a base hit.

Boggs pitched for Investors Heritage and had 11 strikeouts.
