Cross Country: Gearing up for the season

FCHS, FHS, Trimble Co. run in cross country scrimmage at Archives

Three high school cross country teams faced off in a two-mile scrimmage at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives on Wednesday afternoon.

Both local head coaches, Franklin County’s Kelly Lewis and Frankfort’s Jackie Perry, said they used the race as a practice meet.

Perry, who was hired just two weeks ago, said the team still has a lot of work to do.

“Nothing fantastic today, but we’ve only been practicing for two weeks,” Perry said. “We have lots of potential and a lot of people coming in from soccer have been training all summer.”

FCHS’ boys team came in behind Trimble’s junior Tray Robbins, who ran the two-mile course in 11:25.40. Senior Miles Riggs finished second with a time of 11:35.00, followed by junior Bradley Bennett at 11:38.98.

Junior Thomas Stone, who Lewis said “stepped up,” finished fourth with a time of 12:15.56. His teammate junior Joe Cheek followed closely behind in fifth finishing in 12:17.14.

Next, the first runner in for Frankfort, junior Seth Midkiff completed the two miles as the sixth place finisher in 12:21.73. Although Midkiff was the only boy to race for Frankfort, his coach said the team was missing competitors due to a rescheduled soccer game.

“I expect both boys and girls to cut a lot of minutes off their times,” Perry said of Frankfort’s first meet. “By the time soccer gets finished, we expect to have a bigger and complete boys team.”

On the girls side, FCHS’ freshman Ashley Lawhorn took first place in 13:30.69. Sophomore Sarah Ferriell of Frankfort came in first for her team in 19:57.34.

Perry said most of her girls had never run on the course before, which “hit several hills,” that the three-mile doesn’t go around.

Lewis said for FCHS’ second meet, she was pleased with the results in the mid-week afternoon scrimmage.

“This was something different for them to do,” she said. “We have never done a two-mile race before. We wanted them to have fun with it. We really just used this as a practice and did a two-mile speed work.”
