WINCHESTER – The Franklin County boys JV soccer team came from two goals down to win its game at George Rogers Clark Tuesday night, 4-2.
The Cardinals scored their first goal of the game on a shot by Jose Vila at the 22:25 mark of the first half. Less than 10 minutes later, GRC took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Alex Harn.
“The boys came out flat to begin the game and we end up going down early 2-0,” FCHS JV coach Eric Ashcraft said. “They finally settled in and played our team possession soccer.”
The Flyers scored their first goal of the game with 9:48 remaining in the first half on a cross from sophomore Patrick Melton to the back post where junior Austin Fields headed the ball into the net.
Less than five minutes later, the Cardinals committed a foul in the box which set up a penalty kick. The kick was taken by freshman Angel Rodriguez, deflected by the goalkeeper, but followed up for the Flyers’ second goal by Rodriguez.
The Flyers came out and took control of the game in the second half. After another foul by the Cardinals, Melton hit the back of the net on a free kick. Sophomore Joe Meyer scored the last goal of the game on an assist from Rodriguez.
“The second half was all Flyers,” Ashcraft said. “We dominated possession and how the game was being played. We picked up the two goals we needed to win the game. They played a great second half and showed a lot of heart to come back and win this game.”
FCHS JV (4-1-1) plays on the road at Boyle County tonight.
