Rain interrupts Region 9 tournament

LEXINGTON – Play was suspended in the Region 9 boys golf tournament Tuesday because of heavy rains.

The tournament resumed this morning at 8:30. All five of Franklin County’s golfers had teed off, and Western Hills had one player who had started Tuesday when play was suspended.

The tournament is being played at Kearney Hill Golf Links. The top two teams in the regional tournament and the top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the state tournament next week at Bowling Green Country Club.


Chicago Classic tickets, bus reservations available

Kentucky State University’s football team will play Albany State University in the Chicago Football Classic at 4 p.m. (CST) on Saturday at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill.

Tickets for the Classic, which range in price from $15 to $40, can be purchased from KSU’s Department of Athletics in Bell Gymnasium. Information about the Classic, including the stadium seating diagram, is available at www.chicagofootballclassic.biz.

Buses will leave at 6:30 a.m. from the Northpark Walmart parking lot at 500 West New Circle Road in Lexington; at 7:15 a.m. from the Walmart parking lot in Frankfort, which is located at 301 Leonardwood Drive; and at 8 a.m. from Riverview Park in Louisville at 8202 Greenwood Rd.

The bus reservation deadline is 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27.

A $60 per person package includes round-trip bus transportation, a premium seat game ticket and a ticket to the Thorobred Corral Tailgate Party.

Elks Lodge Soccer Shoot is Oct. 13

Frankfort Elks Lodge No. 530 is sponsoring its local Soccer Shoot at the Second Street Gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 1-5 p.m.

Boys and girls compete separately in four age groups based on their age as of Aug. 1, 2012. Age groups are U14 (12 and 13), U12 (10 and 11), U10 (8 and 9), and U8 (7 and younger).  

All participants arriving by 5 p.m. will be allowed to participate. Birth certificates MUST be presented to verify age prior to participation in the District Shoot.

Winners will advance to the KY East District competition, to be held at the location above at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28. The State Shoot will be held in Northern Kentucky on Nov. 11.

District winners will receive additional details and may qualify for limited travel expenses. Similarly, State winners will advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regional to be held in Hagerstown, Pa., in March.
